Irwin Ziment, MD

  • Professor Emeritus of Clinical Medicine, Department of Medicine, at the David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA, and Olive View-UCLA Medical Center

Dr. Ziment trained at Cambridge University and Guy’s Hospital Medical School in England. He became a pulmonologist in the United States, and has been on the faculty of UCLA School of Medicine since 1968. Dr. Ziment spent seven years at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and was then appointed Chief of Medicine at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center. After 26 years in this position, he stepped down in 2002. He has had active roles in local, state and national societies, and has lectured widely on his interests in asthma, mucus and alternative therapies. Dr. Ziment authored a textbook, Respiratory Pharmacology and Therapeutics, in 1978. This emphasized the use of herbal remedies and derivatives in the management of abnormal respiratory tract secretions. Since then, he has been recognized as an authority on expectorants, mucolytics, and herbal therapies in the treatment of coughs, colds and bronchitis. He has written numerous articles on these topics, and has emphasized the history and the potential value of Chinese and Indian phytomedicines in treating respiratory disorders. Dr. Ziment has examined the importance of alternative therapies for use in integrative medical practice for over 25 years in numerous lectures to medical audiences throughout the world. His concern that herbs should be subjected to scientific evaluation led to his initiating a recent textbook, Evidence-Based Herbal Medicine by Michael Rotblatt, M.D., Pharm.D., and Irwin Ziment, M.D., F.R.C.P. Dr. Ziment currently spends his time evaluating the use of herbal therapies, with a particular emphasis on spices, and is working closely with the Biomedical Library at UCLA to provide exhibits and develop a section on Alternative Medicine.
